Harlem Globetrotters
The Harlem Globetrotters are international superstars who have played in over 118 countries. Not only can they master the art of basketball, the team transforms the sport into pure theater and comedy.
The team was founded in 1926 in Chicago and adopted the name Harlem because it was a beacon for the African-American community. The Globetrotters' theme song is "Sweet Georgia Brown" -- a version whistled by Brother Bones.
The group was originally a serious competitive team, and despite a flair for entertainment, they would only clown for the audience after establishing a safe lead in the game. The Globetrotters eventually worked comic routines into their act until they became known more for entertainment than sports. Their skits often feature incredible coordination and skillful handling of one or more basketballs, such as passing or juggling balls between players, balancing or spinning balls on their fingertips, and making unusual, difficult shots.
The Globetrotters’ legendary roster of alumni includes Wilt Chamberlain, Marques Haynes, Meadowlark Lemon, Reece "Goose" Tatum and Fred "Curly" Neal.
On Wednesday, February 16, the Harlem Globetrotters will be our special guests at Amateur Night at the Apollo.
